“We’re asking drivers to be extra observant and cautious while traveling through areas where schools are,” said Cindy Lopez Werth, Longview PD community service officer. “If you see flashing lights in school speed zones or children, please slow down!”
Several elementary schools will hold summer school classes from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, July 9-27. School speed zones will be enforced during those times. Lights will be flashing to alert drivers that the school speed zones are in effect.

Garage-Yard Sales Guidelines
The City of Longview would like to remind residents that while conducting a garage sale does not require a permit, garage sales are a regulated activity within city limits. Sales of secondhand merchandise conducted from residences and designated as garage sales, estate sales, yard sales, and/or moving sales are allowed without a permit provided they are conducted under the following requirements:
Residents may conduct garage, estate, yard and/or moving sales from their residence for up to 20 days in a calendar year. Each sales event may not exceed four consecutive days, and goods must be removed from public view between sales.
No sale shall begin before 8 a.m. or continue beyond 9 p.m.
No goods or merchandise shall be offered for sale that are not owned and used by the persons conducting the sale.
No more than four residences may combine merchandise in the sale.
Garage sale signs shall not be placed more than six blocks or 2,400 feet from the location of the sale, within the right-of-way without the adjoining property owners permission, within the right-of-way along a state route (such as Ocean Beach Hwy., 1st and 3rd Avenues, Industrial Way, Tennant Way, etc..) and these signs shall not be placed on utility poles, trees, medians, or other devices located within the public right-of-way.

Tutors needed at the Longview Public Library
We need your help! Project READ, the adult literacy tutoring program at the Longview Public Library, has an immediate need for volunteer tutors. Training is provided. Tutors typically work two hours per week to help other adults in our community improve literacy skills.
You don’t need any special skills or to speak another language. If you are 18 or older, have graduated from high school or earned a GED, and can read this, you are QUALIFIED! We are looking for creative, caring, and patient volunteers willing to give two hours a week to help an adult improve literacy skills and reach life goals.
Project READ matches volunteer tutors with adult learners to work one-on-one in the Longview Library. Sessions are typically twice a week for one hour during regular library hours. The library is open from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. If you want to help, we can work with your schedule. Volunteers are asked to make a six-month initial commitment but are welcome to stay longer. We really need tutors who can help between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. for those learners who are working during the day.
The library provides teaching material and resources, direction, tutor training and ongoing support. Training is on the computer and self-paced. You can do it at home or in the Longview Public Library. Please call Elizabeth Partridge at 360-442-5321 for more information.
