Filled Sandbags Available to Public
Cowlitz County Department of Public Works hosted a well-attended Flood-Fight & Sandbag Training course provided by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Cowlitz County Department of Emergency Management. The course involved both classroom and hands-on training. As a result of the hands-on portion, there are approximately 300 filled sandbags at the Public Works administrative facility.
These sandbags are being offered at no charge to the public. Anyone interested in obtaining sandbags should come to the Cowlitz County Department of Public Works office at 1600 South 13th Avenue in Kelso between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Sandbags are limited to 25 bags per household. Recipients are responsible for loading and hauling their sandbags.
Please store the sandbags appropriately. Sand filled burlap sandbags deteriorate when exposed for several months to continuous wet and dry environments and may not be effective when needed for emergencies if stored improperly.
It has been a dry summer season and current concerns are, understandably, focused on wildfires. However, our rainy season is approaching and it is never too early to prepare for emergencies.
