Columbia Heights Road Street Improvements
For years, Columbia Heights Road from Lynnwood Drive to Parkview has suffered from
several imperfections in the roadway. In addition to the dips and valleys, there were potholes
from 4” - 6” deep. To correct these deficiencies, the City Street Department recently performed
what is known as pre-leveling or skim patching. This is a common method to remove or lessen
the roller coaster feel of the roadway. Although the pre-leveling looks rough, it provides for a
smoother lane of travel from that which previously existed.
Pre-leveling is a precursor to chip sealing. Best practices suggest that pre-leveling occur as far
in advance of chip sealing as possible. This allows the porosity of the fresh asphalt to get filled
and the rock/oil of the chip seal to adhere much better. Columbia Heights Road is scheduled to
be chip sealed in late July/early August. The chip seal will seal and cover the pre-leveling
patches, providing a uniform travelling surface, and motorists will enjoy a much smoother and
safer roadway surface.
